SCHMIDT® Nr. 20.100 Direct Acting Air Press 
Application, Requirements
Assemble a worm gear and a flywheel onto the motor shaft in one pressing cycle. Criteria for this application is:
- Monitor press force of the worm gear to shaft portion. If maximum force of 44 lbs. is registered, the part is rejected.
- Maintain the .120″ +/-.01″ flywheel to motor housing gap.
Concept Description
Two presses opposed to each other. A key component of the tooling in between the two presses are split spacer plates, operated via pneumatic cylinders. This spacer supports the wheel while components are loaded and also determines the gap between flywheel and motor housing, as components are pressed to bottom out against each other. The plates can move vertically in order to guide the wheel during the pressing cycle.
Operation
Load the worm gear into a pocket in the nest which is supported via a solid tooling bottom, located via its outside diameter. Place the flywheel onto the split spacer plates, which locate the wheel via its outside diameter. Load the motor into the upper tool with the shaft down, which is held via detent pins. The cycle is initiated by a PRC50-D1 two hand control.
During the cycle, the flywheel and housing are seated against the gap plates. In order to ensure the seating force spike is not measured, monitoring will be stopped approximately .03″ before the motor contacts the plates.
Once the ram and guide plates have retracted, the operator can remove the completed assembly.
