Application
The assembly consists of two components; Piston & Swivel shoe. This precision Aerospace related assembly, a cylindrical piston (about 0.5″ dia. x 1.5″ long) together with a swivel pad, is used inside a hydraulic motor or piston pump. The Swivel shoe needs to be swaged very accurately (with less than 0.002″ linear play) to the sphere on the piston. Additionally, the swaging must not have visible creases from the four-segment swaging tool.
Operation of Tooling
These segments will close very accurately to a virtually closed, continuous circle, once the spring loaded sleeve of the upper tool contacts the segments. Once the segments are closed, the piston is pressed into the socket, which will cause the forming. The design of the tooling will open the tooling to allow loading and unloading of components without removing any tooling.
Tooling Description
The lower half of the tooling consists of a tooling base that accommodates four interchangeable segments. The forming segments are product specific. One set of inter-changeable tooling was required per each assembly type. The upper tooling is designed to accept the piston. Around the piston press piece is a spring loaded sleeve which will seat the forming segments into the tooling base prior to beginning the forming sequence. One complete upper tool is required per each assembly type. The tooling base is designed so a linear measurement sensor could be incorporated without modifications to the base. The measurement sensor would provide an alternate reference to produce the joint of these piston assemblies.
One Set of Tooling, consisted of:
- Upper pressing tool, located accurately on press ram and locked into press ram with one set screw.
- The tool has a spring-loaded sleeve to work in synchronous with lower forming tool.
- Tooling base to accommodate forming segments.
- Two sets of four section forming segments.
- Each of the sets are accommodated by the tooling base.
